Mixed Media/Fiber — persimmon dye, silk covered paper yarn, gold pigment ink, nubi on linen and hemp cloth
33 x 23 inches

Persimmon dye-painted mathematical signs of less than and greater than symbolize the distorted perceptions of value in our society’s hierarchy that are tearing our country apart. Underneath our differences of race, level of education, gender, financial resources, occupation, etc., the essence of our being is equal. We all are of equal infinite value, expressed by the gold nubi equal sign inside the gold painted circle, a universal symbol of equality and wholeness. Underneath our different skin colors, our bones are the same white color (white linen). In Korea, hemp cloth is traditionally used for mourning clothes. I grieve for the fractures in our country created by the hierarchy yet still hope and believe that our country can be mended (torn fabric sewn with gold thread).

Nubi is a traditional Korean quilting technique where twisted cords of hanji (traditional Korean mulberry paper) are used as batting.
