Grief and Rage
Joomchi, hanji, hand stitching, sumi ink, cochineal ink, gold pigment ink, white linen cloth
33 x 20 inches
2020
Grief and rage were emotions that I often felt throughout 2019 while reckoning with social injustice. I painted a small joomchi paper with black and red sumi inks to express my emotions. The gold ink reflects the heat of my anger. I sewed the joomchi onto a white linen panel painted with red sumi ink, natural cochineal ink and gold pigment ink to express the dissipating of my feelings. Inspired by a a line from a Pema Chödrön book, the lighter shades of pink and gold and the hand stitched wave pattern on the linen panel are intended to evoke a sense of the tenderness of my heart’s healing journey.
