This book is an expression of my experience of the Inauguration event.
The unbound pages of alternating mulberry paper with words of my poem and suminagashi (Japanese marbling) on Eastern papers are held together by a band of hanji (Korean mulberry paper). The book is meant to be handled, taken apart while reading the poem and viewing the printed papers. I wanted to offer the reader a beautiful tactile experience while reading the book.
The ripple designs created by the suminagashi process express my intentions for the wisdom and courage modeled by our multigenerational leaders, President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and poet Amanda Gorman to ripple out to touch our country.
The yellow and red palette of the book board cover and bojagi book jacket was inspired by the colors worn by Amanda Gorman. I hand stitched the bojagi, traditional Korean wrapping cloth, which carries with it in every stitch, my blessings of happiness and hope for our country. The bojagi is decorated with red bak jwi maedeup, ornamental knots, which symbolize good luck. We’re going to need lots of it as we try to reconcile our communities which are continually being fractured by dark forces.
