Upper Road to Waimea

kapa (Hawaiian barkcloth) / bojagi (Korean wrapping cloth)

wauke (paper mulberry tree), natural undyed and dyed with kukui, hanji (Korean mulberry paper),
vintage sambe (Korean hemp cloth)

11.5 x 16.5 inches (unframed)
2024

I used fragments of leftover kapa, some of which I beat into new kapa and watermarked,  joomchi (a traditional Korean paper making method using my handmade hanji), and vintage sambe (Korean hemp cloth) to hand stitch a bojagi (Korean wrapping cloth). The color palette of this work is inspired by the environs I encountered on my weekly drive to Honopua Farm in Waimea, Hawai’i Island to be with my kapa making hui.
