Voice and Power

Mixed Media — acrylic, hemp cloth, hand stitching, gold pigment ink on canvas
36 x 60 inches
2020

In memory and honor of Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Obangsaek, traditional Korean colors, associated with five elements, symbolizes balance and harmony which are fractured in our country and the Supreme Court. The gold cracks inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi, express the concept of recognizing the history and beauty of brokenness and restoration. They represent my belief in the resilient spirit of and hope of healing for our country.

The letters are made of hemp cloth, sambe, which is traditionally used in Korea for funeral and mourning clothes. I grieve the loss of RBG and the hypocritical nature of the confirmation process of her replacement. My vote is my voice and power to effect change. Hand stitching the textile letters onto the canvas is a metaphor for mending our country.

The design of this piece is inspired by jogakbo bojagi, traditional Korean wrapping cloths. Bojagi carries with it wishes for happiness.
